For those who were playing along at home, the problem with booting via the Ubuntu LiveCD was apparently about my NVidia graphics card.
I downloaded the alternate installer, which booted right up and is happily installing away. But now I need info on the drivers I need, etc.

CommentPress does appear to work with WP3.1, with one exception: the new 3.1 menubar covers the CP menubar. Should be easy to fix. I hope.
