One can fantasize at this point about a whole flood of lawsuits from the Ds arguing that all action on presidential orders \(Including the signing of bills\) must be held until itā€™s determined whether or not the president is a foreign agent, right? #please?

As Iā€™m wrapping up the last chapter of Generous Thinking, Iā€™m pondering the potential for recentering the university as a community in itself as well as in connection to the broader community.

Replying to @kfitz

If you have good examples, let me know? I'd be most grateful.

Fri Dec 22 13:44:56 +0000 2017

Replying to @kfitz

I'd like to look at as many experiments in that kind of institutional recentering as possible: how they're imagined, how they're structured, how they're received.

Fri Dec 22 13:44:56 +0000 2017

Replying to @shermandorn

Thanks for these suggestions, Sherman!

Fri Dec 22 14:05:55 +0000 2017

Replying to @shermandorn and @LDBurnett

Both? Probably? But mostly I need to look at some examples of real experimentation ā€” the university stretching beyond itself, building bridges, becoming outwardly rather than inwardly focused.

Fri Dec 22 14:09:40 +0000 2017

Replying to @kfitz

Just to clarify my thoughts here a bit: Iā€™m hoping to examine experimental initiatives in which the university stretches beyond itself, builds bridges, becomes outwardly rather than inwardly focused.

Fri Dec 22 14:47:56 +0000 2017

So examples might be @CALMSUā€™s Citizen Scholars program \(http://www\.cal\.msu\.edu/citizenscholars\). Or @UMBCHumanitiesā€™s Baltimore Stories project \(https://dreshercenter\.umbc\.edu/multiple\-communities\-multiple\-stories/\).

I have been biting my tongue, but canā€™t continue to do so. What those of you passing around that open letter about the MLAā€™s data sharing practices havenā€™t been told is that the org has informed the author repeatedly that itā€™s developing a new platform with an open API +

Fri Dec 22 15:03:24 +0000 2017

Replying to @kfitz

that is designed support exactly the kind of research the author wants to do. That sort of development takes time, and the org has asked for \(and obviously not received\) his patience.

Fri Dec 22 15:04:31 +0000 2017

Replying to @kfitz

Thereā€™s more to be said about valuing the work that a non-profit scholarly organization undertakes to support the profession and research within it appropriately, but Iā€™m just going to leave it there.

Fri Dec 22 18:43:53 +0000 2017

Replying to @_akpiper, @amandafrench, @jasonrhody, @Ted_Underwood and @kbourrier

Andrew, I was copied on multiple email messages in which my former colleagues told you what they were working toward. You would not hear them.

Sat Dec 23 00:02:42 +0000 2017

Replying to @_akpiper, @amandafrench, @jasonrhody, @Ted_Underwood and @kbourrier

And scholarly orgs do have a responsibility to make data as open as they can while still making it possible to do the work. And producing something like the Bib requires a LOT of work.

Sat Dec 23 00:03:45 +0000 2017

Replying to @_akpiper, @amandafrench, @jasonrhody, @Ted_Underwood and @kbourrier

So the MLA, as my colleagues told you, is seeking a sustainable means of making the data open to researchers. But itā€™s an enormous, expensive project. And the org has a responsibility to the field as a whole to ensure that it, and the project, can survive.

Sat Dec 23 00:06:32 +0000 2017
