This is exactly what I’m getting at. Are our institutions listening to the expressed needs of whatever community/ies they are interacting with? Can we treat public service as our actual rather than merely slogan-based value?

Oof, exactly what I’m trying to get at. That’s the underlying meaning of “societal impact,” I think, and what I want us to think a bit more carefully about. Again, it’s a whole chapter, so can’t cover adequately here.

That is far more blanket a suggestion than I am trying to make. But any institution that declares itself to be in the public service needs to be thinking more about what that means, how it’s manifested, and how it affects assessment, reward structures, priorities.
