Replying to @kfitz

I was in high school there during the first wave, post-consent decree, when white flight took the form of a few magnet schools \(which I attended, and which were integrated, but which did not look like the city\) and a massive proliferation of parochial and private schools.

Mon May 20 16:06:04 +0000 2019

Replying to @kfitz

And the effect of that was the withdrawal of white electoral support for tax/bond issues funding public schools. Why would we pay for public schools, they said; we’re paying to send our kids to private schools.

Mon May 20 16:08:54 +0000 2019

Replying to @kfitz

Shockingly, the school system went into a significant decline. Teachers were underpaid and under supported, facilities fell apart, and the school to prison pipeline took root.

Mon May 20 16:10:56 +0000 2019

I need some advice, colleagues, especially from senior academics with a strong commitment to service to the field.

Tue May 21 11:48:12 +0000 2019

Replying to @kfitz

In any given season — the three months of summer, say — how many tenure and promotion cases would you agree to serve as an outside evaluator for?

Tue May 21 11:49:28 +0000 2019

Replying to @kfitz

Now, say you’ve already committed to adjudicate a prize during those same three months, a process that involves reading and evaluating five books. Now how many T&P cases would you say yes to?

Tue May 21 11:50:47 +0000 2019

Replying to @ehayot

Oof, that’s a lot!

Tue May 21 11:55:10 +0000 2019

Replying to @kfitz

The early responses are leaning heavily toward one, maybe two. Which is where I think I am gravitating, given my desire \(a\) to do a good job of the reviews I agree to, and \(b\) to actually get some research done this summer, too.

Tue May 21 12:01:57 +0000 2019

Replying to @kfitz

Now, another question: say you have two requests to review the dossiers of two equally extraordinary scholars, one going up for tenure and one going up for full. You have room to say yes to one of them, but no more.

Tue May 21 12:03:56 +0000 2019

Replying to @billhd

Mmmm, interesting!

Tue May 21 12:05:35 +0000 2019

Replying to @kfitz

The tenure case has a far greater potential impact, of course. But say you’re in a field with very few fulls available to review at rank...?

Tue May 21 12:11:01 +0000 2019

That’s where my thinking is, more or less. \(There are not a lot of fulls\. I wish it were otherwise\.\)

Tue May 21 12:13:29 +0000 2019

Replying to @ProfMSCaballero

It does make a difference, absolutely. My subfield has few fulls at all, and VERY few women fulls. And helping support one who might join me there seems like a Very Good Thing.

Replying to @NicoleWallack

Hmmm. That’s a good criterion. Personally, I think they’re both shoo-ins, but I’ll think about that a bit.

Replying to @SheilaABrennan

Yep. I would love to chat with you about this as well. It’s enormously important, and time-consuming, and hard to do well. And hard to find a balanced approach to if you really care about building academic community.

Tue May 21 13:23:54 +0000 2019

Watching on the edges of my timeline the all-too-frequent debates about whether “y’all” is singular or plural. Y’all, it’s plural.

Tue May 21 17:23:22 +0000 2019

Replying to @kfitz

“All y’all,” while of course also plural, is not a simple plural. It’s the plural emphatic, and can be roughly translated as “each and every last one of you.”

Tue May 21 17:25:32 +0000 2019

Replying to @kfitz

Like hearing your full name called out by your mother, getting all y’alled is almost never a good sign.

Tue May 21 17:27:13 +0000 2019

I’d argue that’s still plural: you, the person in front of me, and the implied others of the group to which you belong, even if they’re not at the table. The only times I ever heard y’all as a singular — in 20+ years in south Louisiana — was as a performance of cute Suthern.

Wed May 22 16:49:37 +0000 2019

There are so many more important targets of our well-honed critiques than one another. And it is certainly not serving our collective good when we go after one another, egged on by those without our interests even remotely at heart.
