I was in high school there during the first wave, post-consent decree, when white flight took the form of a few magnet schools \(which I attended, and which were integrated, but which did not look like the city\) and a massive proliferation of parochial and private schools.

And the effect of that was the withdrawal of white electoral support for tax/bond issues funding public schools. Why would we pay for public schools, they said; we’re paying to send our kids to private schools.

Shockingly, the school system went into a significant decline. Teachers were underpaid and under supported, facilities fell apart, and the school to prison pipeline took root.

So secession is not new here. This is just the newest tactic by which an overwhelmingly white middle class refuses responsibility for the municipality as a whole.

The early responses are leaning heavily toward one, maybe two. Which is where I think I am gravitating, given my desire \(a\) to do a good job of the reviews I agree to, and \(b\) to actually get some research done this summer, too.

Now, another question: say you have two requests to review the dossiers of two equally extraordinary scholars, one going up for tenure and one going up for full. You have room to say yes to one of them, but no more.

It does make a difference, absolutely. My subfield has few fulls at all, and VERY few women fulls. And helping support one who might join me there seems like a Very Good Thing.

I’d argue that’s still plural: you, the person in front of me, and the implied others of the group to which you belong, even if they’re not at the table. The only times I ever heard y’all as a singular — in 20+ years in south Louisiana — was as a performance of cute Suthern.
