I have heard nothing from my own campus even beginning to approach a 2x-weekly testing frequency. And if that’s an “incomplete defense,” we have effectively built a chain-link fence against a tidal wave.

1. This is the cost of not reopening, true. And the cost of reopening campuses where every germ spreads like wildfire will be 1000s of lives. The financial losses you describe are terrible. The human losses I describe are immoral.

And 2. These financial costs derive from the privatization of higher education and its transformation into a business. Had we not lost the sense of education as a public good, we’d have the state backing required not to have to put dollars over lives.

The fact of needing to balance the budget is not in question. The question is HOW. Over the last 40 years the revenue model for higher ed has shifted dramatically from state funding to tuition paid by families and students.

Stéfan and I shared a campus visit to another Canadian institution some years ago, and I was delighted to have that chance to get to know him a little better. He was brilliant, and generous, and extraordinarily kind: much too unusual a combination.
I am super excited about this.
It’s been a painful, difficult few months for all of us. We’re over-stretched and under-supported. And I think a lot of us are nearing breaking points.
