Do you have experience working toward transformative change in academia, or do you know someone who does? I'm seeking interviewees to help support the revision of Leading Generously. More info: https://kfitz.info/lg-call-for-respondents/

So… I gave a Zoom talk today and forgot to actually show my slides. I mean, I ran the deck, and used the presenter’s notes. I just never shared my screen. Frankly, it’s possible it was better that way.

Ironically, the last trip I took, in February 2020, was to Cancun. By the time we left to come home, it had started to feel like traveling was a bad idea — and there was only one known COVID-19 case in that part of Mexico.

Within a week of getting home, everything had locked down tight. And the trip felt like some kind of fever dream.

Which academic press am I? Verso Books. I feel seen enough to want to lower the blinds.
“You tend toward speaking in manifesto-esque monologues, but it’s not your fault if people keep listening.”

As a literary scholar by training, most of my research method across my career has pretty much looked like “read book, take notes, read more book, take more notes, outline ideas, revisit notes, draft something messy, read more book” and so on. +

For Leading Generously, though, my method has branched out to include listening to *people*. And WOW is this exciting. +

I have so far learned how to design an interview protocol, to put together an informed consent document, and to submit the documentation necessary to convince the IRB that the project is exempt. +

And yesterday I got to conduct my first interview, which I’m now transcribing the key bits of. How utterly amazing to get to listen to people’s stories, to ask them questions, and to think with them about what I can learn from their experiences. +

I would 💯 agree with that — and not incidentally say that the academy would benefit from more STEM folks with the souls of literary scholars, and more literary scholars trying to think like social scientists, and etc!
