Ironically, I got my scheduling notice today. And I’ll say that getting 3-D imaging last year was transformative: the first year in 16 in which I did not need to have a followup ultrasound.

And possibly as a result I lost track of new music ages ago, pretty much as soon as I stopped listening to FM radio. Like college? Certainly by grad school, when any new song I heard that I liked turned out to have been released two years before.

Some part of this is no doubt due to me just not being all that musical, frankly. Friends my age talk to me about the ways that, for example, David Bowie saved their lives, but I didn’t run into him into way later, and the idea of music saving my life wasn’t part of my frame.
Okay, musical confessions time. I came of age in a bad place and at a bad time, which I think of as the Eagles Sweet Spot: super-white suburban deep south; post-disco panic; pre-new wave. The idea of “corporate rock” as an insult did not resonate.

Those of you for whom this day is hard, I see you. I cut off contact with my male parent nearly 20 years ago, with a highly problematic couple of decades leading up to that decision. I have regrets, but continuing to bash myself against that particular wall is not one of them.

In the last week I have:
- gotten a foot* of hair cut off
- rediscovered my capacity for and love of swimming laps
- pushed a crucial grant proposal through to the place it needs to be
- welcomed a new colleague to the team*not an exaggeration
I have also:
- recognized that other work things are moving more slowly than I want and begun to make peace with that, even if it means that I’m going to have to send some mildly mortifying email messages soon.
