EL-area friends! The time has finally come for me to admit that waiting to see my long-time stylist in NY is not likely to work anymore. I need a haircut — my first since April 2019 — and I need someone I can trust with a pretty big change. Any recommendations?

And possibly as a result I lost track of new music ages ago, pretty much as soon as I stopped listening to FM radio. Like college? Certainly by grad school, when any new song I heard that I liked turned out to have been released two years before.

Sat Jun 19 22:47:34 +0000 2021

Replying to @kfitz

Some part of this is no doubt due to me just not being all that musical, frankly. Friends my age talk to me about the ways that, for example, David Bowie saved their lives, but I didn’t run into him into way later, and the idea of music saving my life wasn’t part of my frame.

Sat Jun 19 22:47:34 +0000 2021

Okay, musical confessions time. I came of age in a bad place and at a bad time, which I think of as the Eagles Sweet Spot: super-white suburban deep south; post-disco panic; pre-new wave. The idea of “corporate rock” as an insult did not resonate.

Sat Jun 19 22:47:35 +0000 2021

Replying to @kfitz

Anyhow. All of this is over-compensatory prelim to nervously putting forth my opinion: that Jackson Browne is a genius unfairly tarnished by a stupid era in music.

In the last week I have:

- gotten a foot* of hair cut off
- rediscovered my capacity for and love of swimming laps
- pushed a crucial grant proposal through to the place it needs to be
- welcomed a new colleague to the team

*not an exaggeration

- recognized that other work things are moving more slowly than I want and begun to make peace with that, even if it means that I’m going to have to send some mildly mortifying email messages soon.
