This was a massive hospitality issue in NOLA post-Katrina. The problem wasn’t that there weren’t people who wanted work. It was that there was no housing available at a rate those working people could afford to pay.

From my perspective, the issue is less profit than it is producing enough revenue/goodwill/community investment to keep the thing running. Without that kind of sustainability contributions to the general good can wind up doing inadvertent harm.

Yeah, and this is the issue with the funnel as the icon for “filter.” Chem lab folks may envision a filter funnel straining out impurities. All I see is gavage: a means of ensuring that the firehose makes it down your throat after all.
