I had the pleasure of being part of Digital American Studies townhall this morning and took the opportunity to revisit the notion of "neoliberal tools." https://kfitz.info/revisiting-neoliberal-tools/

We had a conversation in the townhall just this morning about concerns among junior scholars that they can’t say no to extractive publishing contracts. YOU CAN SAY NO. https://twitter.com/carolinepennock/status/1509466601208360962

I find myself eating these words. In the last two weeks I've had five migraines \(after a lifetime of never ever having more than one a month\) and I'm now trying to minimize the effects of my chronic \(and career\-mandated\) screen overuse in any way I can. https://twitter.com/kfitz/status/1468692576005992454

I'll be honest: I hate it. I find the white characters glowing out of dark backgrounds super irritating. But so far at least \(based on approximately 1 hour of migraine hangover use\) it does seem like it might be better.

So @mkirschenbaum, you were completely right. I still stand by the idea that the corporate software world embraced dark mode so quickly because it enables most users to keep working beyond capacity, but I get that it's necessary to allow some users \(that is, me\) to work at all.

My most ridiculous current pet peeve: The weather widget on my watch thinks that the day’s high/low temperatures should be literally determined: the highest and lowest temps during the present 12:00am to 11:59pm period.
Thu Apr 14 14:25:56 +0000 2022

The problem arises with a day like today: it was 63F at midnight, and then the temp dropped to about 39 by 6am. This afternoon it’ll go up to about 52. High today: 63.
