I should have known you were a Virgo. I’m on the Leo/Virgo cusp, born half an hour into Virgo, and so feel all this with extra sparkles.

I am horrified that this institution would attempt to leverage the court's reactionary politics in pursuit of its own goals without regard for the degree to which it could weaken key civil rights and education laws. The damage this could do is nauseating to consider. https://twitter.com/MattBrownEP/status/1554101374308204546

Today’s ALIAS EMMA day! I knew I was super excited, but didn’t realize how super excited until my device downloaded two different pre-orders from two different apps. Can’t decide which to read first @AvaGlassBooks

I predict both will be DELIGHTFUL.

I wish instead of developing augmented reality glasses, folks would instead develop glasses that would let me see this reality better.

Tue Aug 02 19:46:49 +0000 2022

Replying to @kfitz

Right now I have progressives, which are pretty, but I have to change them out for computer distance glasses for the vast majority of the work day. And I of course forget to change them back.

Tue Aug 02 19:48:06 +0000 2022

Replying to @kfitz

Surely we are at a sufficiently advanced stage of technical development that someone could invent genuinely multi-focal lenses? Like lenses whose focus you could adjust with a little wheel on the frame?

Tue Aug 02 19:49:54 +0000 2022

Replying to @kfitz

Or, like, self-adjusting contact lenses? Or something?

Tue Aug 02 19:51:21 +0000 2022

Replying to @kfitz

I just can't help but think we're focused on solving all the wrong problems.

Tue Aug 02 20:00:30 +0000 2022

Replying to @jvinopal

I’ve tried multifocals. They didn’t work for me; the sweet spot was like 8 feet away. I’ve currently got the 1 and 1, which is a reasonable compromise for everything more than 3 feet away. Until I get tired, and then I have trouble focusing.

I informed her that I have never had COVID, and so if she gave it to me it would be the first time. And her partner — who also had COVID right then and there — demanded that I apologize for having avoided it this long.

Sun Aug 14 13:49:07 +0000 2022

Replying to @kfitz

One of them said “this is just gopher COVID, though” — which I took to mean a bounce-back reinfection, like COVID whack-a-mole? “It’s not serious like when you had it the first time,” she went on to say.

Sun Aug 14 13:49:07 +0000 2022

I had a dream last night in which I was trapped in an extended family event that was already awful in multiple ways, and then I found out that two of the people there had COVID. Like right then, as they were talking to me.

I have read two books in the last two weeks that use the term “tribe” to stand in for “group of meaningfully connected people.” One of these books was not so great; the other is really, really good. But I keep getting kicked out of the argument by that term.

Wed Aug 17 13:10:59 +0000 2022

Replying to @kfitz

The less-than-great book was published in 2017; the great one in 2018. Is sensitivity to the cultural appropriation involved in this term that recent a development?

Wed Aug 17 13:12:21 +0000 2022

Replying to @scott_bot

Good question. It’s possible that the primary author on the first book is. The author of the second \(really good\) book is likely not.

You know what we need to institute? Mandatory reading days. Like, no meetings. No email. Perhaps no connectivity at all except for that needed to obtain and engage with a text. Otherwise just me — um, I mean “us” — and the things being read.

Wed Aug 24 18:37:29 +0000 2022

Replying to @aktange and @DrRCGreene

I love this idea. My “Peculiar Genres of Academic Writing” class in the spring started every session with half an hour of writing time, and it was inevitably productive for all of us.

Wed Aug 24 20:01:33 +0000 2022

Look, I got out of grad school with about $30K in non-public student loans, covering my *one* unfunded year. I had \(unknown to me, and an enormous surprise\) family help covering the interest until I graduated, so the principal didn’t skyrocket. +

Wed Aug 24 22:08:15 +0000 2022

Replying to @kfitz

And when I won a fancy college award with a nice cash bonus at the end of my third year, I threw that cash and a bit of savings I’d accumulated at the loans and paid them off. +

Wed Aug 24 22:08:16 +0000 2022

Replying to @kfitz

I was paid $43K per year at my first job out of grad school, which was quite good for entry-level humanities salaries in 1998! And I didn’t have kids or major medical expenses. And so I threw down and paid the loans off double-time. +

Wed Aug 24 22:08:16 +0000 2022

Replying to @kfitz

Everyone deserves the privileges I had. And barring that, everyone deserves an education without debt. +

Wed Aug 24 22:08:17 +0000 2022

Replying to @kfitz

Yay me, I totally deserve a cookie. But again: one year of loans, surprise family help, solid starting salary, no major expenses, bonus. It was not my inherent virtue and hardworking deservingness that paid off those loans. +

Tue Aug 30 17:09:05 +0000 2022

Replying to @kfitz

That review process resulted hundreds of comments from dozens of readers, and it confirmed my sense of the ways that peer review could be made a more productive, collaborative process. /2

Tue Aug 30 17:09:05 +0000 2022

Replying to @kfitz

Leading Generously builds on the work begun in Generous Thinking by thinking through the necessary tools for transformation of the academic landscape. It explores some key aspects of leadership in moments of institutional change. /6

All of which leads us up to today: I'm opening a new community review process for in-process manuscript, Leading Generously. /5 https://leadinggenerously.hcommons.org

Tue Aug 30 17:09:06 +0000 2022

Replying to @kfitz

I was delighted when @gmbritton suggested that I use a similar community process for Generous Thinking in 2018. And again, dozens of commenters shared their ideas and really helped me rethink some key portions of the argument. /4 https://generousthinking.hcommons.org

Tue Aug 30 17:09:06 +0000 2022

Replying to @kfitz

The comments were integral to my revision process, and their publication on the review site made it possible for me to give credit to their authors for the ideas they so generously shared with me. /3

Tue Aug 30 17:09:06 +0000 2022

Replying to @kfitz

I hope that you'll come by and discuss the project with me and with other readers. Your comments will not just help me produce a better book, but will help all of us create better institutions. /fin https://leadinggenerously.hcommons.org

Tue Aug 30 17:09:07 +0000 2022

Replying to @kfitz

Fundamentally, Leading Generously is about the collective, collaborative work of institutional transformation. But adequately describing that work requires collective, collaborative input. /9

Tue Aug 30 17:09:07 +0000 2022

Replying to @kfitz

It's my hope that Leading Generously might help more people who see the opportunity for change figure out how they might go about creating it. /8

Tue Aug 30 17:09:07 +0000 2022

Replying to @kfitz

But while I hope that Leading Generously might help improve the quality of leadership in our senior administrations, the book is in many ways less for them than it is for "us," those of us who work for those institutions from middle-management on down the org chart. /7
