I’ve tried multifocals. They didn’t work for me; the sweet spot was like 8 feet away. I’ve currently got the 1 and 1, which is a reasonable compromise for everything more than 3 feet away. Until I get tired, and then I have trouble focusing.

I had a dream last night in which I was trapped in an extended family event that was already awful in multiple ways, and then I found out that two of the people there had COVID. Like right then, as they were talking to me.

I have read two books in the last two weeks that use the term “tribe” to stand in for “group of meaningfully connected people.” One of these books was not so great; the other is really, really good. But I keep getting kicked out of the argument by that term.

I love this idea. My “Peculiar Genres of Academic Writing” class in the spring started every session with half an hour of writing time, and it was inevitably productive for all of us.
Look, I got out of grad school with about $30K in non-public student loans, covering my *one* unfunded year. I had \(unknown to me, and an enormous surprise\) family help covering the interest until I graduated, so the principal didn’t skyrocket. +
