I haven’t had COVID *that I know of*, but the autoimmune issues I have had came with a similar sense of havoc. And the unmasking, the blasé attitude, is terrifying indeed. Yes, you might not get very sick today. But what effects will linger?

Political appointees would be much worse, in terms of being captive to the interests of a single powerful individual. Except that eight years is a ridiculously long term. And asking statewide voters to select among candidates in a vote that far down the ballot? +
I have said several times over the last few years that the way Michigan's trustees for the big three universities are selected is the worst possible method, except for all the others. What I mean by this is this: at least they're elected. +

But the powerful interests behind business and sports have uses for the university that don’t always align with its educational mission, and they bring along assumptions about top-down authority that rarely align with shared governance. +

In the current electoral environment, that means the election is primarily about name recognition. And name recognition by and large means business or sports. That isn’t a bad thing in and of itself. +

When your board is politically appointed, a changing electorate can have significant effects through the race at the top of the ballot. But shifting the outcome of a race based on name recognition is hard. +

And that’s already a recipe for disaster. But add to it eight-year terms, and the possibility of re-election and inertia of incumbency make things worse. +
